Job Description

Location: We operate a flexible, hybrid working environment with the candidate required to travel to either our Winchester or London office once or twice a week.

Purpose

We’re looking for a hands-on Principal Data Engineer to lead the design and development of robust, scalable data infrastructure and pipelines that support advanced analytics, reporting, and real-time processing across the business.

You'll work with cutting-edge technologies including AWS (Glue, S3, Redshift, Lambda, Kinesis), Apache Spark / PySpark, and orchestration tools like Airflow or Dagster. This is a strategic role you’ll not only lead on architecture and delivery but also act as a subject matter expert and mentor for the wider engineering team.

Accountabilities

  • Design and implement scalable, secure, and optimised data pipelines for batch and streaming processes.
  • Build and maintain robust ETL/ELT processes using PySpark, Glue, Redshift, Lambda, and Kinesis.
  • Lead data engineering solutions that support both structured and unstructured data from multiple sources.
  • Partner with data scientists, analysts, and cross-functional teams to define data requirements and deliver production-ready solutions.
  • Drive observability and automation using tools like Dagster, Airflow, or Rundeck.
  • Champion best practices in data security, lineage, and governance.
  • Provide thought leadership on emerging data technologies and mentor other engineers.
  • Collaborate with DevOps on deploying containerised solutions via Docker/ECS.
  • Optimise SQL and Python-based data transformations for large-scale distributed systems.

Knowledge & Experience

  • Proven experience in leading end-to-end data engineering projects in cloud environments (preferably AWS).
  • Deep knowledge of data architecture, ETL pipelines, and real-time data processing.
  • Hands-on experience with distributed systems, data warehousing, and modern orchestration tools.
  • Ability to simplify complex problems and communicate solutions clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong mentoring ability and stakeholder management experience.
