GNC Systems Engineer

Location: USA – Remote

About Antaris:

Antaris is the world’s first software platform that dramatically simplifies the design, simulation, and operation of satellites. Our patented end-to-end framework features easy design tools, digital twinning, open APIs, complete spacecraft software and secure space data networking. The Antaris platform is proven to cut time-to-orbit by half and reduce costs by 75%. https://www.antaris.space/platform

Using the Antaris platform, organizations can conceive and design satellites that are ready for orbit in just months vs. years. The world’s first cloud-built tech demonstration satellite, JANUS-1, was completed in just 10 months with participating providers from seven countries, and successfully launched into orbit on February 10, 2023. JANUS-1 is a software-defined 6U satellite created entirely with the Antaris software platform. https://www.antaris.space/press-release-janus1-launch

What We Are Looking For:

As a Guidance, Navigation, and Control Systems (GNC) Systems Engineer, you will take full responsibility for designing a generic satellite GNC implementation by parameterizing the system to adapt to various satellite configurations and payloads with little to no supervision or direction. You will collaborate with electrical, mechanical, flight software, and mission operation teams to optimize sensor data processing and filtering, control design, and overall GNC system architecture for all stages of satellite operations.

Responsibilities:

  • Model, design, develop and test attitude estimation algorithms, attitude control algorithms, orbit maintenance/control maneuvers, and sensor/actuator modeling
  • Design robust control algorithms for flexible spacecraft using reaction wheels/CMGs, torque rods, and propulsion systems
  • Collaborate with hardware and software teams to prepare detailed system performance specifications including sensor/actuator characterizations and redundancy and fault management
  • Create and maintain MATLAB/Simulink, Python, or equivalent simulation environments to test and validate GNC algorithms and control strategies
  • Implement algorithms in C/C++ or other relevant languages and contribute to the development of the GNC software stack in the flight controller computer
  • Perform rigorous simulation and validation of the GNC algorithms, ensuring robust performance under various astrodynamics and mission use cases and scenarios
  • Prepare detailed documentation, including algorithm, performance specifications, test plans, and results reports
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including hardware engineers, mission planners, and software developers, to ensure seamless integration of the GNC subsystem into the overall spacecraft systems

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's, Master's, or Ph.D. in astrophysics, aerospace, or similar engineering discipline
  • Demonstrated minimum five years of project or professional experience in satellite attitude determination, navigation, guidance and control is a must
  • Experience in designing, developing, implementing, optimizing, and testing robust estimation and control algorithms on hardware systems is a must
  • Strong mathematical background with expertise in control theory and estimation techniques is desired
  • Strong understanding of astrodynamics, modeling and simulation, classical and modern control, and software development
  • Proficiency in languages such as MATLAB/Simulink, Python, C and experience with relevant software tools is a must
